My friend told me yesterday that using turn signals to merge from lane to lane isn't a Maryland traffic law.  I don't believe him.  I've been looking up Maryland traffic laws and I can't find anything about turn signal usage anywhere!!  Can anyone shed some light on this topic?  How can it not be against the law to refrain from using turn signals?!

Well, he was right!  I found where I needed to go and I got this information on turn signals.  It says they 'may' be used, but they're not required.  Who knew?

(1) May be used to indicate an intention to turn, change lanes, or start from a stopped, standing, or parked position; and

(2) May not be flashed as a courtesy or "do pass" signal to the driver of any other vehicle approaching from the rear.

I don't know how true that is.

I went to http://mva.state.md.us/Resources/DL-002B.pdf (MD's MVA)

Wiped off the dust from the Driver's Manual, and read the following from pg 16

" Look behind you and to both sides, Signal your intention as frequired by law before changing lanes."

Hmm, but the header of that section was "Turning", so I'm not sure if merging into a turn lane is different from merging on the highway.  Do any cops frequent this site?
