For those of you that follow football, you might have heard about the Steelers releasing Cedrick Wilson because he allegedy punched his girlfriend in the face (don't worry, this story will be relevant to the religion forum in a bit).  The Steelers organization and especially the owner, Dan Rooney, were praised because it was made clear that the release wasn't because Cedrick wasn't a contributer on the football field, but instead because they didn't want someone with bad character on their team.

This is where it gets a bit interesting.  Only 11 days earlier, James Harrison, a star player for the Steelers, allegedly broke down his girlfriend's door and slapped her so hard that her sunglasses flew off.  The Steelers didn't kick him off the team.  Rather, they sent him to anger management counseling.  The double-standard is obvious.  Harrison is a star player, while Wilson wasn't a big factor in the Steelers' success.

Here's where it pertains to the religion forum.  When Dan Rooney (Steelers owner) was asked about the obvious double-standard, this is what he said:

"What Jimmy Harrison was doing and how the incident occurred, what he was trying to do was really well worth it," Rooney told reporters about Harrison's intent. "He was doing something that was good, wanted to take his son to get baptized where he lived and things like that. She said she didn't want to do it."

W...T...F?!?!  So basically it's ok to break down your girlfriend's door and smack her around if it's to get your kid baptized.  Quotes like that just make me hate the Squealers even more!  But it also makes me sigh and wonder what the hell is wrong with some people's reasoning abilities.  To me, it's a very sick thing to say.  And this guy is a very well-respected, powerful man!

Rooney's merely using religion as a scapegoat. He's trying to justify Harrison's behavior because he's a key player for the Steelers. There have been numerous public figures over the years that used religion to their advantage. Harrison's an abuser (thug), plain and simple and Rooney's reasoning ability shows his lack of moral values. He's only well-respected because of this money and power status. Take that away and what's left? A  man's only as good as his word. No Steeler's fan here.

I'm just wondering how that statement made sense in his mind.  Even if he is using it as a scapegoat, he thought to himself "Yeah, this makes sense!"  Beyond me!

Here's what I do with things like this; I resolve that I would like to speak with Rooney and get a comprehensive understand of what his position on everything is. That will never happen, so I will never feel like I know enough of all events mentioned to make a judgement one way or another.

There are basics - domestic violence is horrendous, we can all agree there. And no church that I would ever personally endorse would make a judgement/ decision like the one you described. That said, maybe I am just super skeptical. I just don't trust media to tell me things like that. Life is very personal, even if lived in the public eye to a degree.

For example, Ann Coulter's quote: We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity. We weren't punctilious about locating and punishing only Hitler and his top officers. We carpet-bombed German cities; we killed civilians. That's war. And this is war.

That is a crazy quote! I do not listen to her radio show or read her books but I think we all know she's a staunch conservative pundit and she uses freedom of speech to the fullest. I can't fathom making sense out of this comment but still, I reserve judgement until I heard a LOT more context.
