What is pickleball?

This exciting new sport combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. With a relatively small court and slow pace, the game is perfect for all ages and abilities.

Not only is it easy to learn
how to play pickleball, but it’s also great for you and enjoyable at all levels. Playing pickleball can improve your coordination, balance, and fitness, making it an excellent activity when staying active. Studies even show that regular play can have significant health benefits, especially for seniors.

Pickleball has been growing in popularity across the country. With
over 36 million players in 2022, it’s now the fastest-growing sport in the US. There are 10,000+ pickleball courts nationwide, more than twice the number of courts just a decade ago, so it's easy to find a place to play.

Frederick has a vibrant pickleball community, with facilities offering indoor and outdoor courts. There are events, tournaments, and social gatherings for players of all levels, making it easy to get started. It’s no surprise that the welcoming atmosphere of the city extends to its pickleball community.

Kathy Scott, USA Pickleball Ambassador for the Mid-Atlantic area, explains that upon moving to Frederick, she found "a core group of people who shared their love of pickleball, with others often teaching at the rec center.”

She mentioned David Silberman, Frederick’s first USA Pickleball Ambassador. “He has introduced 100s to the game, educating them about the sport and the need for more courts. He is regularly seen on the courts working with anyone who wants to learn,” Kathy said, highlighting Silberman’s dedication to promoting pickleball in Frederick.

Another local, Joe Leonard, is a pickleball instructor in Frederick. “We finally got our own dedicated courts last year in downtown Frederick,” he said, commenting on how much the community has grown recently. “Slowly but surely we're catching up.”
